Shared Storage for 4K Editing

Solution overview

Shared editing requires smooth simultaneous access and on-time delivery, placing demanding bandwidth requirements on centralized storage.

Without high-performance storage, productivity can fall significantly.

Jingcun high-performance NAS sharing and XSAN sharing architectures both address these requirements.

  1. Storage capacity from hundreds of TB to several PB, requiring high-capacity arrays.

  2. From over 10 to over 70 editing clients, requiring high-bandwidth shared storage for multiple workstations.

  3. Support for client systems including Windows, OSX, Linux, Unix and AVID.

  4. Secure, reliable centralized storage with RAID levels including RAID 0, 1, 3, 5, 6, 7, 10, 50, 60 and 70.

  5. Strong scalability to meet future requirements while reducing expansion costs.

  6. Advanced hardware and software with a low total implementation cost.

  7. Aggregate bandwidth up to 20000MB/s, supporting approximately 70 simultaneous online editors.

Solution details

Option 1: High-performance shared NAS

Centralized online editing over 10-gigabit optical networking

For collaborative 4K editing, connect 4/8 10-gigabit ports directly to a core all-10-gigabit switch. Editing workstations require 10GB optical ports. Aggregate read bandwidth of 4GB/s–20GB/s supports smooth simultaneous editing on 10–70 terminals.

Jingcun centralized storage supports SSD acceleration for smooth timeline scrubbing during collaborative editing. Backup storage can connect directly to the switch, with the primary system automatically copying new data to it on a daily schedule.

Keep 2 copies of important data to ensure its complete safety.

No additional sharing software is required. Windows, Linux and Mac clients can work simultaneously, with a lower acquisition cost and straightforward future expansion and management.

Solution features:

High efficiency and performance. Centralized storage reduces media copying and enables direct online production, saving substantial transfer time for collaborative teams and keeping work responsive. With the same number of drives,

Jingcun centralized storage offers more than twice the bandwidth performance of comparable products for smooth production.

SSD acceleration enables smooth collaborative online editing and improves random I/O for clustered rendering.

User permissions protect data without requiring AD domain membership. Advanced controls include group-based read/write access and restrictions preventing selected users from deleting files.

Important output files can be protected from deletion after writing. Recycle bin and auditing record when, by whom and which files were deleted.

Recycle bin, antivirus and snapshots provide built-in backup and historical data retention. Data damaged by viruses, including ransomware, or accidentally deleted can be recovered from retained history.

Rackmount hardware and a Unix operating system deliver stable, reliable operation, with compression and fast copying.

Remote replication automatically backs up data on a schedule or in real time for disaster recovery. Keeping 2 copies ensures complete data safety.

Built-in power-loss protection ensures data already stored on Jingcun storage remains intact during sudden power failure.

Option 2: High-performance shared XSAN

Block-level shared storage for highly concurrent professional production

For collaborative Mac 4K editing, connect 4/8 8GB/16GB FC ports directly to the core all-optical switch (16GB/8GB). Editing workstations require Thunderbolt-to-Fibre-Channel 8GB/16Gb adapters.

Aggregate read bandwidth of 4GB/s–20GB/s supports smooth simultaneous editing on 10–70 terminals.

Jingcun FCSAN connects SAN volumes, the XSAN metadata controller and all XSAN clients through high-speed Fibre Channel switches. An XSAN metadata controller server enables shared FC storage,

allowing all Mac computers to access data directly on the SAN.

The FC-based SAN is an efficient storage network. Hosts and servers connect directly to storage through optical switches. SAN management software arbitrates access, providing 8Gb–16Gb effective bandwidth between each workstation and storage.

An optical SAN uses fiber connections, so the storage equipment must support optical connectivity.

XSAN enables Apple users to share data simultaneously, with transfer links up to 20Gbps. Thunderbolt adapters provide high-speed shared storage for Apple clients.

  Solution features:

High performance: A Jingcun 16G FC storage port delivers measured read/write bandwidth of approximately 1,500MB/s. Multiple ports support multilink load balancing and scalable aggregate bandwidth.

High reliability: The embedded Storage OS reduces failures. Optional dual controllers provide redundant backup, with reliability up to 99.9999%.

Fast RAID rebuilding restores only damaged data, substantially reducing rebuild time.

Patented RAID technology supports configuration-file export for data security.

SSD cache acceleration makes collaborative online editing smoother.

Scalability: Multilevel expansion increases capacity severalfold.
